How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster. 1. Engine Speed Sensor It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly. If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40). It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If audi a1 key having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay. 2. My Web Site , while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else. I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero. I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA! 3. Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. genuine audi key replacement -style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy – put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms. 4. ECU The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down. A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good option. 5. Tachometer A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected. The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
